NATURE CONSERVATION BURNS.

Conservation burns are carried out annually on Gotska Sandön and may take place during your stay on the island.

Carrying out controlled fires, so-called conservation burns, is part of the management of Gotska Sandön. By letting parts of the forest burn in a controlled manner, the continued presence of both animals and people on the island is ensured.

Most nature conservation burns planned on Gotska Sandön take place in late spring and early summer. But other periods of the year can also be suitable for conservation burning, depending on the weather and the type of nature to be burned. This means that a nature conservation burn can take place at the same time as there are boat trips for visitors to the island. The burnings are surrounded by rigorous security work and should not pose any danger to any visitors. However, depending on the burning location, some parts of the island may be closed during the burning, and depending on the wind direction, the smell of smoke may be present on parts of the island.

A place and an approximate time span for when the conservation burning can take place are usually decided several months in advance. However, it is difficult to determine exact days for the burning earlier than 2-3 days before ignition.
